Kirkjufell is located in the western fjords of Iceland right outside the town of Grundarfjordur. I had seen so many photos of this mountain and waterfall combo on 500px and Flickr that I had to see it in person. Here's the thing; it was not what I had expected at first. I'm willing to bet most people were a little disappointed at first as well. Let me explain.
We stayed in Grundarfjordur for the night at a real nice apartment that we rented from a dude named Gunnar. Gunnar's apartment had a clear view of Kirkjufell that just didn't match up with all the classic photos I had seen of this wizard's hat. So, I hopped in the car and went closer only to find out that perspective changes this mountain into the photos I had seen on the web.
The photos seen on this page are from the ride into Kirkjufell and just outside of Grundarfjordur. As is with all of Iceland; Grundarfjordur was a quiet town. We did manage to get to the government run liquor store "Vinbudin" before they shut down for the evening. Liquor is expensive everywhere, but we needed to quench our thirst. I woke up early the next morning and went out by myself to capture sunrise. It was slow to rise, but it did eventually bring in some decent light.
Would I return when I go back to Iceland? Yeah, but I would probably put it further on the back burner to get to some of the other locations we didn't get a chance to visit. Grundarfjordur and Hofn (we're getting there) were two of the nicest little towns we visited while in Iceland, and as always I'd love to continue exploring.
